PILOT  STUDY  INVESTIGATION.

PROBLEMS WITH INDOOR AIR POLLUTION
Solid fuel has its appeal to rural residents because it is readily available and free. It is this same fuel that produces harmful particles when burned. Most Filipinos cook indoors with a disproportionate number of rural residents using biomass to cook.

PROBLEMS WITH ELECTRICITY AVAILABILITY
Large factors that play a role include high installation and maintenance costs or poor home structural stability. (5) The current electricity rate is at P10.52 ($.022) per kilowatt-hour, the fifth highest rate in the world. (6)

IN  THE  PHILIPPINES.

Picture
Our pilot study of KleanCook in the Philippines in the summer of 2014 gave us a glimpse of how our device was used and how it operated in the actual user setting. We will use this experience to improve the design and technology of KleanCook.

Our study took place in Zamboanga City in Mindanao, the southernmost region of the Philippines.

In addition to reputable regional statistics, we analyzed data from our in-field surveys of more than 120 rural individuals in Zamboanga City and observed a need for KleanCook. In collaboration with a local partnership, we studied the use of KleanCook in each household and collected both quantitative and qualitative data on KleanCook's technology and social impact by giving one KleanCook to each of ten families.

CONCLUSION

We gave a KleanCook to 10 chosen households through preliminary surveys to establish a study baseline for user expectations and potential interactions with KleanCook. With this, we were also able to to carry out our CGI U Commitment to Action by giving out 10 stoves to 10 families.

The local population was involved in the final design of the KleanCook to ensure that the individuals could actually integrate it into their lives and benefit from it as much as they can. For a more personal insight into our pilot study, check out our blog.

TECHNICAL METRICS
SOCIAL METRICS

Energetic Heating Efficiency
The water boiling test (WBT) measures stove performance with a standard task (boiling water). KleanCook boils a known amount of water with a known amount and type of fuel.
Picture
In the Controlled Cooking Test (CCT), results of the WBT are compared to a typical Filipino biomass fire that would heat up the same amount of water.
Picture
The Kitchen Performance Test (KPT) determines how effectively KleanCook reduces fuel consumption.
Picture
Power Generation Module Efficiency
This is performed in parallel with the WBT. Data from this test will help us determine the heat flux through the power generation module and effectively calculate thermoelectric generator (TEG) power efficiency.
